Jobs for Youth (J4Y)

The Project was conceptualized in 2016. The J4Y Project was strategically designed and aligned with the MGDS II, the National Youth Policy (2013), the Malawi Country Strategy Paper (2013-17) of the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the Jobs for Youth Strategy for Africa (2016) of AfDB. It remains relevant towards promoting youth development in Malawi as outlined in the MGDS III (2017 - 2022). The overall goal of the Project is to economically empower young women and men for improved employability in decent work and sustainable entrepreneurship.

J4Y Has Three (3) Components

Entrepreneurship Education & Sustainable Enterprises Development

The main objective of this component is to enhance youth involvement in the creation of small businesses by fostering an entrepreneurship culture amongst them and supporting the creation and development of youth owned enterprises.

In order to achieve this, this component mainly focuses on three (3) sub-components; 
  1. Entrepreneurship Culture Development
  2. Implementation of Incubators and Market linkages

Institutional Support & Project Management

The main objective of this component is to improve the planning, implementation and coordination processes for youth employment promotion through harmonization of policies and regulatory frameworks. The Project focuses on four (4) targeted sectors, namely;
  1. Agriculture
  2. Manufacturing
  3. ICT
  4. Small-Scale Mining

Skills Development for Employability

The main objective of this component is to provide practical training to out-of-school youth and to implement a youth internship programme within existing companies. In order to achieve this, this component focuses on two (2) sub-components;
  1. Implementation of a one-year internship programme
  2. Rehabilitation and construction of the Community Training Colleges, namely;
    • Naminjiwa in Phalombe District,
    • Youth Development Center in Neno District,
    • Mbandira in Nkhota-kota District
    • Ngara in Karonga District
